Dementia Support Services

Our Backstory

After opening The Gloaming at Santa Fe, we wanted community service to be an integral part of our practice. We asked community members in the Eldorado and surrounding area to identify their most pressing issues, and we learned of a growing need for support for family members caregiving loved ones with some form of cognitive decline (e.g., stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, dementia, and Alzheimer's). Having both had loved ones with Alzheimer's, this need hit close to our hearts. Over two years ago, we began offering a free caregivers support group that continues to meet and has expanded significantly. Having walked this journey with folks from early stages through end of life and from living at home through transitioning to residential facilities, we recognize the need for even more expanded support services for the individuals living with cognitive decline, their caregivers, and their extended family and friends. To respond to these needs, we offer the following services:

Individual Counseling & Coaching

One-on-one support for folks living with cognitive decline and also for caregivers. Our work focuses on such areas as understanding and proactively responding to changes over time, the impact of cognitive decline on your own life and important relationships, and how to live optimally in the midst of unpredictable challenges. For those living with cognitive decline, we offer shorter sessions and adapt our counseling and coaching styles to fit your needs and abilities.

Couple and Family Counseling & Coaching

In these sessions, we take a team approach. We combine both regular informal observation and skill assessment with your observations out of session to brainstorm responses that address small and large changes over time. For example, we have addressed issues such as the impact on relationships, accessing resources to provide greater activity and caregiver respite, driving, independent activity, and changes in ability to communicate via email and phone.

Family Consultation Meetings

We recognize that families are complex, and cognitive issues may be part of a larger context of ongoing joys and challenges. Often families may be blended or spread around the country or world. Family Consultation Meetings can be helpful for such reasons as: providing family members with an overview introduction to the specific cognitive decline a person is facing, assessing family members' needs for support, and checking in during major disease changes or living situation changes. We offer to facilitate in-person or virtual family meetings and can provide meetings in your home if more convenient.

Caregiving & Living Situation Strategy Sessions

These sessions can assist those living with cognitive decline and their loved ones with situational, single sessions in which we brainstorm ways of responding to such issues as: needing to access more caregiver support services, considering transitioning from home to a residential community, a sudden acute change, or dealing with complex family situations. For families considering residential care, we have offered to accompany them touring facilities. This can be helpful especially when your key support system lives at a distance from you.

Dementia Sensitivity Training

For businesses, organizations, and agencies, we offer training that includes an overview of dementia and its effects on the daily lives of persons living with the disease and their caregivers. This training will support your organization in providing more competent and compassionate services to people impacted by this illness.

Fees for Services

We offer our services on a fee-for-service basis and do not accept insurance. You may pay by cash, check (payable to The Gloaming at Santa Fe, LLC), or credit card via Square (Visa, Discover, MasterCard, American Express, JCB or UnionPay logos).
